The child on the shoulder

Christopher is one of the few saints whose attribute is another person. He is identified by a child carried across water on his shoulders and by the staff he leans on, and the legend attached to the image explains both: the ferryman finds the child impossibly heavy, and is told he has carried the weight of the world. The name itself is part of the sign — it means bearer of Christ. Painters keep the water, the staff and the child; everything else is discretionary.
